JACOB SMITH

IN HIS OWN WORDS

"I was lucky enough to grow up in the countryside of Somerset.  The space I had around me has definitely had and effect on my creative process.  I find inspiration in nature and I like to have room to breath. Which has led me to where i am now, working out of my studio on coast of Cornwall.

My musical style could be labelled as Modern-Classical, but there are subtle elements of Folk, Minimalism, Post Rock and other styles there too.

Growing up my Dad listened to a lot of Jazz, Classical and Folk music mostly.  He introduced me to great music that has stayed with me throughout. Composers such as Phillip Glass, Simon Jeffes, Michael Nyman.  Storytellers like Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Tom Waits. Musical Maestros Bill Evans, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk.

Mostly though I find my inspiration outside of music, from my experiences, my surroundings, stories i hear and the emotions I feel."

BIOGRAPHY

Beautifully haunting minimal piano compositions from Exmoor.

Jacob Smith composes his evocative, modern-classical piano music from the his studio, situated in Cornwall. He uses stylistic elements from folk, minimalism and post rock, in his music and draws on his experiences of growing up in Somerset’s bountiful nature as inspiration. Combining the spirit of Cornish countryside, his own experiences and surroundings growing up, Jacob Smith pulls on the musical influences introduced to him by his father. The repertoire of Philip Glass, Simon Jeffes, Michael Nyman and the storytelling of Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie,Tom Waits combined with the mastery of Bill Evans, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, are among some of the artists that shaped Jacob’s personal style.

A carpenter, having handmade many of the components of his home, Jacob’s music is a reflection of the artists love for having ‘room to breathe’.
